Canadian Financial Databases (1:30-4:30) Organized by Laine Ruus This session will provide an overview and demonstration of major Canadian financial resources, including the Financial Post Corporate and Mutual Funds databases, the Canadian Financial Markets Research Center (CFMRC) Toronto Stock Exchange database, Compustat and Datastream. ACCOLEDS Business Dinner The ACCOLEDS Business Dinner (informal) will be held at 6 PM at an Italian restaurant within walking distance of campus - details TBA. PCCF+: a mini-workshop on an enhanced version of the postal code conversion file (9:00-12:00) Instructor: Russell Wilkins Vital and Cancer Statistics Statistics Canada PCCF+ is a product available through DLI and permits the linkage of aggregate 1996 Census data with other data containing postal codes. This workshop will describe a variety of uses of PCCF+ and explain how to work with the product. Lunch (on own) (12:00-1:30) Room 2-05B, Rutherford South 4. A Census 2001 Products Consultation (1:30-4:30) Conducted by Marie Desnoyer Census Division Statistics Canada The design of the data products for the 2001 Census is underway and this session will be an opportunity to discuss both the content and format of a proposed range of products. Room 2-05B, Rutherford South 5. Future Access to Public Data: the prospects of a National Data Archive (4:30-5:30) Conducted by David Moorman SSHRC has prepared a background document to serve as the focus of discussions among stakeholders interested in the creation of a National Data Archive for Canada. Dr. Moorman, the author of the SSHRC document, will lead this presentation. Wednesday, May 31 Room 2-05B, Rutherford South 6. Spatial Data Files: barriers to access (9:00-12:00) Organized by Sharon Neary This session will examine a range of issues that present barriers to academic access to spatial data. Among these issues are the restrictive licensing practices of agencies, the prohibitive costs of files, the absence of metadata describing the content of files, file formats, etc. Lunch (on own)(12:00-1:30) Room 2-05B, Rutherford South 7. Proposals before the Canada Foundation for Innovation Related to Public Data (1:30-3:00) This session will share information about four major CFI applications that deal with aspects of data access. While the outcome of these CFI applications will not likely be announced until July, the general knowledge of these proposals is not widespread and this session will be an opportunity to learn more about these proposals. A. A National Academic Spatial Data Network (U Calgary) B. National Infrastructure for Library Data Services (Laval U) C. Developing social statistics for evidence-based public debate: towards a national network of Research Data Centres (U Montreal) D. Canadian Century Research Infrastructure: Public-Use Microdata Computer Files of the Canadian Census (1901-2001 period). (Ottawa U) Room 2-05B, Rutherford South 8. Shaping the Future of Data Extractors (3:30-5:30) Network interfaces providing access to aggregate and microdata files are in various stages of development at several Canadian universities. Recently, DLI workshops in Regina, Halifax and Guelph explored some of these interfaces. The session at Guelph used a review sheet to look at features of data extractors and to discuss design preferences. This session will build upon the discussions begun in Guelph. ----------------------------------------------------------- All sessions and meetings will be held in the Rutherford South Library's second floor Digital Learning Centre (Lab Room 2-03 and Meeting Room 2-05B.) The facilities arepleasant, but food and coffee are not allowed in this building.
